Purpose of the School Resource Program

The primary purpose of the SRO program is the reduction and prevention crime committed by juveniles and young adults. This is accomplished by assigning patrol officers to school facilities on a permanent basis. The SRO program accomplishes this purpose by achieving the established goals and objectives. Goals and objectives are designed to develope and enhance rapport between youth, police ifficers and school administrators. Officers who are chosen for this program are responsible for establishing the communication links and creating a free flow of information between all parties involved.

Program Structure

Uniformed police officers will be assigned to AISD primary and secondary school campuses. SRO's are police officers first, employed by the Sheriff's Department and responsible for carrying out all duties and responsibilities as police officers. SRO's must realize that they are enforcement officers in regards to criminal matters, even though the expectations towards counseling and education are more formally established in this setting. SRO's are not school disciplinarians and should not assume this role. SRO's report directly to the police Administration concerning all matters pertinent to their position and function. SRO's will not invlove themselves in administrative personal matters of the School District which are not criminal matters.
